Resculpt and Redefine Your Dream Contours
When it comes to surgically or cosmetically reducing the signs of aging, many fail to address their neck, which can be an area that quickly reveals age. A deep neck lift1 in NYC is a surgical procedure designed to provide a more natural and youthful appearance by removing excess fat and tightening loose skin and underlying tissue, if necessary. When combined with other procedures, such as rhinoplasty or facelift, its effects can be even more dramatic.
As a double board-certified head and neck surgeon & facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Rizk knows the extensive deep neck anatomy and is able to modify it to achieve optimal jawline definition and contour. One of only a handful of surgeons in New York with this combined skill set, many come from all over NYC and further afield for his exemplary skill and standard of care.
What Is a Deep Neck Lift?
Unlike some traditional neck lifts2 that focus solely on tightening or excising loose skin, a deep neck lift or deep plane neck lift involves working beneath the platysma muscle and underlying tissue to produce a natural and long-lasting look without a ‘pulled’ appearance of altering the skin alone.
By operating beneath the platysma muscle and fascia, the muscle and tissues can be repositioned to a natural and youthful contour, and some excess fat may be removed. This long-lasting surgery technique is a specialty of Dr. Rizk, who regularly performs complex neck and face surgeries.
The deep neck anatomy includes many areas under the muscle which cannot be liposuctioned due to nerves and other vital structures. To achieve jawline definition, very often liposuction is not enough unless you have fat lying above the muscle and are very young.
In most cases, it is necessary to go under the muscle and contour or remove fullness from underlying fat or protruding muscles such as the digastric anterior belly, and very often, the midline platysma cords need to be tied together. Sometimes, excess skin also needs to be removed to achieve the patient’s goals.
A Quick Guide to Neck Lift Surgery
Who Is a Candidate for Deep Neck Lift Surgery?
If you feel like your neck is no longer looking its best, or you have a particularly ‘full’ neck, a deep neck lift may be the perfect option for restoring it to greatness. There are two groups of patients who are candidates for this procedure:
- Younger patients in their 20s & 30s with a full neck and fat under platysma3 with good skin elasticity who need a deep fat reduction and central platysma tightening and no incision around ears with no skin removal.
- Patients in 40’s or older with a full neck that also has loose skin and muscle who would need fat reduction under platysma and central platysma tightening but whose skin is not elastic enough to shrink and will need the deep neck lift in conjunction with a deep plane facelift with incisions around ears to remove excess skin.
At your consultation, Dr. Rizk will provide insight into what will work best for you and answer any questions or concerns about this procedure.
How Is a Deep Neck Lift Performed?
When performing a deep neck lift, instead of the traditional incisions of a neck lift, Dr. Rizk creates a smaller incision under the chin, via which he will lift and manipulate the layers of the neck. Each deep neck lift surgery is different and may require other incisions depending on the needs and goals of the patient. Pockets of excess fat in these deeper layers of the neck may also be eliminated, contributing to an overall more natural finished look.
Once the muscle has been released from the layers underneath, it is lifted and repositioned into its new and improved contour. The excess skin is then trimmed away to create a smoother and more proportionate finish. Liposuction may also be used as an auxiliary technique to contour the neck area further. Results of a deep neck lift are immediately visible but will continue to improve over time as any post-surgery swelling subsides.
